Synopsis
SALT International is a one-year service program beginning in August of each year. It is for young adults between the ages of 18-27 who are eager to continue their faith journey as they learn from people of other cultures in different countries around the world.
There is a minimum contribution requirement that is set every January and posted on the SALT webpage.
The Korea Anabaptist Center (KAC) is a non-profit, resource and networking center for Koreans interested in pursuing a life of discipleship, peace and Christian community. It operates in partnership with Mennonite groups in North America as well as independent churches in Korea. In October 2004, KAC expanded its educational program and 'Connexus' was born. Connexus is a registered language school that offers a range of conversational English programs to clients. It shares office space with KAC and allows individuals access to a wide variety of English language learning opportunities, including those with faith and peace oriented content.QualificationsPost-secondary education or university degree preferred

Experience with both on and offline research and resources (ie: library, online database)
Some knowledge or interest in teaching English in peace-related programs

Willingness to study the Korean language, to live with a local family, and to attend a local church
Assignment DescriptionThe Korea Anabaptist Center serves to introduce the Anabaptist/Mennonite perspective and history to many Koreans for the first time. A diverse and growing number of individuals, both Christian and non-Christian, are attracted to this perspective both for its biblicism and current relevance. Although outright battles have ceased between North and South Korea, the two countries are still at war. The border between the two (also described as the 'DMZ' - demilitarized zone) reinforces this fact as it is the most fortified border in the world. Historically, this region of the world (Northeast Asia) has been one of tension and conflict between the neighboring countries of China, Korea, Japan and Taiwan. Although Korea enjoys a large Christian population, Christian teaching on peace, conflict resolution, mediation, etc. has been negligible. Recent changes in the region have seen more local interest in peace and a steadily increasing number of North Korean refugees coming to South Korea.
KAC works to develop and provide resources related to peace, discipleship, community and Anabaptism through a library, publishing business, online resources, workshops and peace education programs. In September, 2002, KAC begun the 'Peacebuilders Program' - adult group EFL classes that use English instruction as a means to study and discuss peace on the Korean peninsula and in this region of Asia. Since that time, additional peace education programs have begun including middle school peer mediation and conflict resolution programs, a course focusing on theology of peace for Christian workers, and a peace education class for parents and children together. Assist the KAC staff and participate in the ongoing activities of the Center - networking relationships, hosting guests, workshops, etc.Location DescriptionSeoul is a large metropolis in the northwestern part of South Korea. Seoul proper is home to 11 million people and satellite cities around the capital add another 7 million people to this area, making it a very densely populated region. As a large city in a developed country, Seoul has almost everything one would expect in a world-class city - commerce, culture, religion, technology, education, etc. Many people have some knowledge of English and many desire to improve their English conversational skills.South Korea is a small country and any point can be reached within less than a day of surface travel. Public transportation is plentiful, reliable and relatively economical. Korea boasts many historic sites, cultural activities, hiking destinations, and rugged coastlines. Korea also enjoys four distinct seasons with spring and fall being particularly pleasant. Seoul is situated geographically at a latitude similar to that of Wichita, Kansas.The home where the SALTer will most likely live will have all of the modern conveniences one would see in North America. The conversation will mainly be in the Korean language and diet primarily Korean food, including rice as a staple and a variety of meat, seafood and vegetables. The SALTer will likely have a room to her/his self. SALTers are expected to enter into the life of their host family, accepting their place in relationship to other family members (ie: possibly young children, grandparents) and participating in the normal schedule and responsibilities of the family. SALTers will generally have less free (i.e. individual) time and private space than most North Americans expect and appreciate.Risks and ChallengesSeoul is a large, bustling metropolis and SALTers should expect some of the challenges of living in crowded city and dealing with the air pollution caused by many motor vehicles. Although Seoul appears modernized in a Western sense, it still retains its Korean culture in relationships, worldview, language, food and customs that are quite distinct from Western culture.

my two roads

I'm not really sure why I haven't been in the mood to blog lately. I've barely even kept up with reading ya'lls posts. My SALT program interview was yesterday in Philly. I feel good about it I guess, I mean I'm pretty sure I'm eligible and all, but it's hard to say if they will be able to place me somewhere. It's completly in God's hands what will come to be. The strange part is that even though I struggle a bit about what I really want, all in all I'm ok with whatever happens. I guess once you accept the fact that nothing stays the same, life is a lot easier to live when you don't resist the change. Change happens and you can't really do much despite the protest. It's weird because I still can make the decisions for the most part. So I guess this poem has been on my mind a bit lately.

Actually the Sacred Romance, the book I'm reading with my bookclub, has an excerpt from that poem and then goes on to say:

We strike off down the road feeling much more alive than we have in a while. We are clueless as to how we will cross the abyss, but we feel a gladness to be on our way. Nonetheless, many questons nag at our consciousness as we walk. How are we to understand this journey which so few dare to travel? How are we to bring all of the character and plots of the Sacred Romance (have to read the book to understand this) together in our hearts and minds in a way that allows us to be transformed by the Story God is telling? Do we have all we need for the journey? Did we pack carfully enough to travel this more unknown road that is the way of the heart? Perhaps we should return home and get a few more things and a good night's rest before we undertake such a pilgrimage. All these things are on our heart as we begin.

Yeah, I guess that explains some of what I've been feeling. Both roads seem promising to me....going away for missions, and staying here to see what progress will be made in my relationships. I don't know if those roads will ever meet up in the future...so to chose one, I have to be prepared to let the other go. Am I ready to fully accept that? Why is it that nothing ever really seems to fall into place for me until after the fact? That part is hard...but that's what faith is all about. Trusting in the unseen.
